The Frontier Collectionunites the western photography of Jim Krantz with one of America’s most enduring designs—the classic mid-century modern fiberglass shell chair.
Originally designed in 1948 for The Museum of Modern Art’s International Design Competition, the Fiberglass Shell Chair stands as a defining achievement of twentieth-century design.
Each chair is handmade by Modernica in Los Angeles, continuing a legacy of American craftsmanship rooted in the city where the original fiberglass shell chairs were first produced.
The Spyder™ base is crafted from layered North American maple and walnut, molded into intersecting spars and finished by hand with a protective satin coat that highlights the natural character of the wood.
Every chair is individually handcrafted. Subtle variations in grain, tone, and finish are inherent to the process, reflecting both the materials and the care involved—resulting in a piece that feels personal, authentic, and enduring.
The Frontier Collection offers six distinct photographic options, allowing each chair to be selected and configured according to individual preference.
